Howell’s library story began before its familiar stone building. The library’s archives trace the Ladies’ Library Association to 1875, when its collection occupied a rented house.
In 1901, W. H. Wood approached Andrew Carnegie about a permanent library. Carnegie’s offer required local support and a site. Four McPherson brothers donated the property, and the completed library opened on November 19, 1906.
For a downtown visit, the building offers a useful connection between Howell’s past and its present public services. Explore the library’s historical exhibit for photographs and the full account of its construction.
